January 2020 Newsletter

Howdy and HAPPY NEW YEAR!! I hope 2020 proves to be a prosperous and successful year for you all and of course for our beloved AGGIES!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We are excited here at the NWHC Aggie Moms club about the new year!!  We have lots of great events planned for 2020. Below is a list of all the great upcoming events we have planned for January.

First is our monthly meeting on January 14th at 7pm. Our monthly meetings provide a chance to meet with other Aggie Moms, make new friends, do some crafting, share information and learn about the traditions of Texas A&M. We will be eating some yummy Chili at this meeting!! It’s our attempt in celebrating Superbowl with Chili and all the fixings.  Husbands, Aggie students, and siblings welcomed!!

The meeting will be held at the Houston Distributing Company, located at 7100 High Life Drive, Houston, 77066. Arrive at 6:30 for food and fun. The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm. Join our Crafty Moms at 5 pm to work on some of our custom tradition pieces.

Our speaker this month will be Jason Glenn (01’) – Aggie & NFL Football Player. Aggie Dads and Aggie Grandads are welcome, as this will be a great meeting for them to attend because there will be Football Talk & Chili. Lots of chili…….  😊

In addition to eating chili, we will be collecting food donations!!!  At each monthly meeting, we collect donations for a local community group.  January’s group is The 12th Can, a food pantry for students in need at Texas A&M.  We are excited to support this very important group.  Below is some information provided by the founder:

Thank you for your continued support of The 12th Can, Texas A&M University’s on-campus, student-led food pantry! The Fall semester of 2019 has been highlighted by numerous pantry openings, our ability to help provide fresh produce to our clients, food drives, sorting days, socials, and fundraisers. We have grown both in our capacity to serve Aggies in need and in our presence as a student organization. Our passion to fight food insecurity is stronger than ever, and we are working diligently to keep our shelves stocked for years to come. With a successful fall semester in the books, we joyfully celebrate The 12th Can’s unique opportunity to make a direct impact on the Aggie community. However, we recognize that we have only scratched the surface of food insecurity at Texas A&M University and must continue to elevate our ability to provide food for Aggies in need. Two of our current and ongoing goals are:

·         Ensuring we have enough food to serve our clients

·         Increasing our variety of fresh and healthy food

Food insecurity is not just a lack of access to food, but a lack of access to nutritious food. We recently partnered with TAMU Urban Farms United (TUFU) to bring a variety of fresh produce to our clients, in addition to our non- perishables. On top of that, we recently received a freezer trailer that will allow us to serve frozen proteins, such as chicken, beef, and turkey. Every donation we receive, no matter how large or small, gets us one step closer to providing a fully stocked and healthy food pantry for the Aggie community. To ensure that we can continue to serve non-perishable foods while also increasing our ability to serve nutrient-packed, frozen protein, we need your help to raise $10,000 by April 2020.

As established supporters of The 12th Can, we know that you believe in our mission. If you are able to,
we are asking you to consider making another monetary donation to our organization as we try to tackle our goals
and fight food insecurity at Texas A&M. To donate online through the Texas A&M Foundation, please go to
https://give.am/Support12thCan. The Foundation will ensure that you receive documentation to make your
donation tax-deductible to the extent that no goods and/or services were received in exchange. It also gives you the option to make a one-time, or monthly recurring donation, and the ability to check if your employer offers donation matching. We are extremely grateful for your past contributions and will be humbled by any additional contribution that you can make to help fight food insecurity at Texas A&M, if you can do so at this time.  www.the12thcan.org, displays our upcoming openings, directions on how to donate, and our contact information!

Also, this month our Crafty Moms are hosting a craft event at 2:00pm on January 12th at Wayne Enterprises located at 14300 Hollister St, Suite 600, Houston, 77066. We are looking for help gluing our traditions pieces on frames and trees we have made out of wooden spools. Any amount of time or help you can give is appreciated. We also have some pieces that need to be detailed if you are so inclined. See our Facebook page for more info.

Next is our Social Club. This month our social club is hosting Book Club on January 21st, 2020 at 6:30 at Frey’s Backyard Café located at 14441 FM 2920, Tomball, Texas 77377. – Your book to read is Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
